Healthy Oil, High Fat Mayo and Ranch Dressing
One question I get over and over is about mayonnaise and ranch dressing. I’m no cook, so I asked my daughter-in-law Julie, to show me how she makes her homemade ranch, which I love. Hope you enjoy it.
Buying mayonnaise at the store is very hard to do for those of us who avoid vegetable seed oils, like soybean oil and canola oil, and if you don’t avoid them, you should as much as possible. They are not the types of healthy fats that your body needs.
Ranch Dressing is another wonderful treat that I love, but the commercial brands are made with the same vegetable seed oils and added sugar. I try my best to stay completely away from them.
Lucky for us, making mayonnaise with healthy oil is easy, and turning that homemade mayo into ranch dressing is pretty easy too.
Below is a basic recipe that you can use. I like it just the way it is, but you can add whatever low carb spices you like, and I’d love to hear about those changes.
Making Mayo with Olive Oil
Separate the Egg Yolk.
This takes practice for a guy like me, but somehow get the yolk separated from the white. Don’t use the white in this recipe.
Squeeze the juice out of lemon.
Julie has this nice squeezer, but I’d say you could just squeeze it with your hand.
Add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice to the bowl
Pour in 1 cup of Olive Oil
Add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard
I used a brand that did not have added sugar. Watch out, read labels.
Add a couple pinches of salt
We decided to put the whole mixture back in the glass measuring cup, it makes it much easier to mix.
Julie does it like this, instead of the bowl, I distracted her. LOL
Use a stick type immersion blender to mix until thick and looks like mayo. (happens very quickly).
These stick immersion type blenders can be bought cheap or expensive, but they come in handy in this lifestyle.
I bought this one for less than $20.
And, easy quick homemade Mayonnaise without the evil vegetable seed oils.
Now we can make the Ranch Dressing with the good olive oil Mayonnaise we just made.
Paste a clove of fresh garlic.
Chopping the spices.
- Finely Chop a 1/4 cup of fresh parley
- Finely Chop 2 tablespoons of fresh dill
- Finely Chop 1 tablespoon of fresh chives
- Measure 1 Cup of the Olive Oil Mayo that we made
- and 1/2 cup of full fat Sour Cream
Add a 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon of paprika
Add all the ingredients to the mixing bowl.
Mix it all up and put in the refrigerator.
Or just get a spoon and eat a big bite, like me.
