THE Root Cause – Insulin Resistance

THE Root Cause – Insulin Resistance

Drying Up the Root
LCHF and the Fasting Cure
If the major chronic illnesses of today were pictured as a tree, Insulin Resistance could be pictured as the root of that tree.  From this root, the trunk of poor blood sugar control grows and the many branches of that tree represent almost every modern illness that have destroyed the lives of people we all know and love.

The driving force, of why I made “Butter Makes Your Pants Fall Off” was my desire to explain the complicated problem of “insulin resistance”. Last year, while I was losing weight, I was also reading everything I could get my hands on about insulin resistance, because as I studied, I came to understand that this disorder was literally at the root of most the illnesses that plague people we all have known and loved.

The Root of the Problem

Why do I say insulin resistance is the root of the problem?

Because, insulin resistance has been associated with most of the worst diseases we all know about including:

Obesity, mental illness like Schizophrenia, Depression and anxiety, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, irregular menstrual cycles, ovarian cysts, high triglycerides (fat in blood), intestinal problems like IBS, joint pain and skin problems are all related to or in some way caused by or made worse by insulin resistance.

What causes insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance begins as the levels of insulin in the body remain high over a prolonged period of time.

Insulin resistance is also closely related to fat around the middle, or belly fat. Becoming fat around the middle is thought to cause system wide inflammation in the body, which causes the immune system to release chemicals that interfere with the effectiveness of insulin.

What Causes Insulin to Be Constantly High?

If insulin resistance begins when our body has been exposed to a high insulin level for a long time, what causes our insulin to be constantly high?

The most obvious thing is eating or drinking too much carbohydrates in the diet. There are many types of carbohydrates, but the ones that are much more available today, and that have increased as a percentage of the human diet are refined grains and sugar. When we eat or drink these types of food, our body breaks them down quickly into a blood sugar called glucose. As glucose levels quickly rise, so does the production of insulin increase to get this sugar out of the blood.

The Perfect Storm.

This constant high level of sugar in the blood, causes a perfect storm of illness. First, insulin levels stay constantly high because of poor diet. Next, the sugar laden food causes more obesity. Third, the obesity causes the immune system to release a chemical which reduces the effectiveness of the insulin, the muscles cells become even more insulin resistant, which causes the pancreas to make more and more insulin.

On top of all this, insulin has another job, it turns off the burning of fat in the fat cells and muscles. In other words, when insulin levels are high, fat burning is turned off, to force the body to either burn sugar or convert it from sugar to fat. You can see, that if eating a high carbohydrate diet causes insulin to rise, and if the person is constantly eating this diet, then insulin is constantly elevated to move this sugar out of the bloodstream. Obesity increases, because these foods are high in calories and the constantly high insulin levels prevent the burning of fat and converts the sugar just eaten into more fat. The extra fat and constant high insulin levels cause insulin resistance to get even worse. This in turn causes heart disease, type 2 diabetes, poly cystic ovarian syndrome and obesity to name but a few on the problems associated with this perfect storm.

Most diets cause you to use “will power” to eat less, but this doesn’t work for long for most people. The LCHF (low carb/high fat) diet turns off the “out of control hunger urges” that you’ve struggled with all your life and gives you control, gives you freedom without using “will power”. This will enable to do what is called “intermittent fasting”.

Intermittent Fasting or Short-term fasting.

You need to learn about this wonderful and easy process of not eating and all the many things it can do to help you lose weight and reverse many of the health issues a high insulin level causes.

The most complete source of information on intermittent fasting can be gained all in one convenient book, which I highly recommend.
I’ve written a critical review of some of the parts, but I still think “Eat Stop Eat” is the best fasting book you can find at this time.

Alzheimer’s and Some Cancers

The problem with high insulin levels goes even further, researchers are finding that Alzheimer’s may be a type of diabetes they are calling Type 3 Diabetes, caused by insulin resistance in brain tissue, causing these cells to be constantly inflamed and starving for nutrition because of their inability to use sugar. Doctors are also discovering that high sugar levels, caused by insulin resistance keeping sugar in the blood longer and by a constant diet of refined carbohydrates actually feed cancer cells. Some doctors are experimenting by blood sugar lowering drugs like Metformin as a potential treatment for some cancers and Alzheimer’s.

Insulin Control and Living to A Healthy Old Age

Scientists who have studied the very old have found that people who live to 100 years old and older, have much better control of their blood sugar and insulin levels. These people have the luck of good genetics, but maybe if we controlled our blood sugar with lower carbohydrate diets and exercise, we could join the healthy old age club.

Dementia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and insulin resistance in the brain: progress, dilemmas, new opportunities, and a hypothesis to tackle intersecting epidemics.

Diabetes and Alzheimer’s linked – Diabetes can cause several complications, such as damage to your blood vessels. Diabetes is considered a risk factor for vascular dementia. This type of dementia occurs due to brain damage that is often caused by reduced or blocked blood flow to your brain.

The Role of Insulin Resistance in Brain Aging and Dementia

Signs You Already Have Insulin Resistance

  • Fat Around the Middle
  • Heart Disease,
  • High Triglycerides,
  • Low HDL Cholesterol,
  • Type 2 Diabetes,
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome

If you have any of the above you probably have Insulin Resistance –

Skin Tags –

People with insulin resistance often have skin tags.

Discolored Skin –  called Acanthosis nigricans

People with insulin resistance often have discolored skin on their neck, under their arms and between their legs, the condition is called acanthosis nigricans.

What Causes this?

Too Much Insulin – from this article

The most frequent trigger for acanthosis nigricans is too much insulin in your bloodstream. Here’s why.

When you eat, your body converts carbohydrates into sugar molecules such as glucose. Some of this glucose is used for energy while the rest is stored. In order to use the glucose for energy, insulin must also be used. The insulin enables the glucose to enter the cells.

Overweight people tend to develop resistance to insulin over time. So although the pancreas is making insulin, the body cannot use it properly. This creates a buildup of glucose in the bloodstream, which can result in high levels of both blood glucose and insulin in your bloodstream.

Excess insulin causes normal skin cells to reproduce at a rapid rate. For those with dark skin, these new cells have more melanin. This increase in melanin produces a patch of skin that is darker than the skin surrounding it. Thus, the presence of acanthosis nigricans is a strong predictor of future diabetes. If this is indeed the cause, it is relatively easy to correct with proper diet, exercise, and blood sugar control.

Living a Long Life –

My article “Insulin and Living to One Hundred” –

People who live to a hundred years old have better control over their blood sugar and insulin than other elderly people.

It’s one of the few differences researchers have found in the very old.
